I worked at Ray’s from 1991 through 1997 and have thousands of stories that should not be published. What I can tell or try and explain is the way Ray’s and Mother’s used to be, or at least how I remember them. The atmosphere was simply old school Rowdy. People came out to Ray’s to get hammered and get loud. Every night was a good night at Ray’s, even on slow nights, because the local bartenders would migrate over, and the bar would go nuts after midnight. Tuesday night would kick off the “weekend” with toy night; Wednesday night was always staffed with the best-looking bartenders; Thursday through Saturday were just nuts. Every week was the same thing: there would be a line out the door to the alley by 10 P.M., going one for one at the door, busy till last call inside. At last call, we always counted down and all yelled, “Laaaaaaast Caaaaaaaallllllll,” while ringing the cowbell. Most times the crowd yelled, too. I have even more stories of employee events from our annual Christmas party, Brown’s bus trip, and the coveted Spring Party, but they cannot be published. (Levicki, ’96)
