Generation Z is not only spiritually illiterate, but very visually oriented and informed. They consume knowledge of the world through YouTube, Netflix, Hulu—anything they find visually gripping. So when we plan the weekend services at Meck—which, for now, continues to remain our primary “front door” experience—there is very little we don’t try to convey visually, whether during a song that is a part of worship or a point being made in the sermon. For example, before singing a song with the word “hallelujah” in it, we would show an introductory video explaining what the word means. We try to convey the “story” across multiple screens in multiple forms. It’s simply how people best receive information and meaning, content and context.

But the need for the visual goes beyond something as basic as video. It’s reflected in the changing nature of language itself.
