Chapter 13
âAlara, dear, did you get enough sleep?â
âWhat?â I looked around, confused.
âI asked if you got enough sleep.â
It was Debbie. She looked strange, though. Faded and pale. I had just been looking for something. Was I looking for Debbie? I think I wanted something from her. There was something about her that I was supposed to remember. What was it?
We were standing near Debbieâs desk. As she walked to her chair, I noticed she was engulfed in an ashy mist. Something was definitely wrong with her.
Debbie reached for her purse, but it fell to the ground. It finally clicked as I stared at the contents of her bag strewn across the floor. Debbie was gone. This was a dream. Iâm supposed to remember that Iâm dreaming. Iâm supposed to find out what happened.
âDebbie?â
She was piling books on her desk. One after another. Where were they coming from?
âDebbie?â
âYes, dear?â She didnât stop stacking the books.
âDebbie, please help me. What happened to you? Show me, please.â
âIâm very busy, Alara.â
More and more books appeared in front of her. I moved closer, standing behind her. They werenât books. They were ledgers. Old, handwritten accounting books.
A man appeared in front of Debbieâs desk. What was he doing here? His button-down shirt was rumpled and his hair was tousled in all directions. Kirkâthat was his name.
Kirk ran his fingers through his hair, mussing it up further. âI know what youâre doing, Debbie.â
Having finally run out of books, Debbie started straightening the heap in front of her so that the ledger edges were perfectly aligned. Without looking at Kirk, she responded, âWhat I do is my own business.â
He leaned over the ledgers, forcing her to look at him.
As she met his gaze, a gray cat walked up to scratch at Debbieâs legs. The books started moving. No, something was moving on the books. Beetles.
Kirk kept his gaze locked on Debbieâs. âYou wonât get away with it.â
He lingered over the beetle-covered books, his unwavering stare growing darker.
I stepped forward to push him away, but the cat jumped at me, hissing and batting my face. The cat was black now, with bright yellow eyes. It kept jumping, pressing me back from Debbie. I turned to escape the cat, running down the hall until I couldnât hear the feline behind me anymore.
Bending over to catch my breath, I no longer saw the industrial office carpet. I was looking at plush white carpet instead. I was in Debbieâs house now. This was her hallway.
Maybe she was here now too. I had to find her. I had a mission. She had to show me what happened.
I raced through her bedrooms and bathrooms. There was no sign of her. I could hear something from the other side of the house, though. Pinging and squeaking noises.
Following the sounds, I found myself in the kitchen. Blue light near the sliding door obscured my vision. The pinging and squeaking were overwhelmingly loud.
âDebbie?â
âAlara?â
Was she outside? I moved towards the sliding door. The blue light grew stronger and my head was full of ping after ping.
