Chapter 18
BY THE time theyâd rejoined the group, the girls were lazing about on the banigs theyâd brought along for this purpose. Once again, the servants had been creative with the blankets, turning them into canopies to protect the creamy Spanish complexions from the damaging rays of the sun. Coppertone suntan cream was a new product that many of the servicemen carried. John explained the benefits while applying a thin layer on his light skin, which was bright pink. Heâd waited too long and was already suffering from mild sunburn. The women looked on in amusement, commenting that he seemed to be basting his skin so the sun could fry it better. They couldnât understand how it worked and concluded that umbrellas and oversized hats were a far better solution.
Nevertheless, Daisy saw an opportunity, and she took the tube out of Johnâs hand and offered to spread some on his back. âLet me help you,â she said, ignoring Gregâs glare and her older sistersâ reproving looks.
âI can manage,â John protested.
âWhy should you when Iâm offering?â
âSuit yourself,â he replied with a shrug.
Daisy squeezed out a long line of cream over the wide shoulders, noting the freckles scattered like grains of sand on his smooth skin. âDo all redheads have these or is it just you?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âIâve never seen so many freckles.â
âThey come with the territory.â
âI see,â she said, kneading the powerful muscles that quivered under her hands. She stepped closer and pressed against Johnâs bare torso. Leaning over, she draped her arms over his shoulders and massaged her way down the hard planes of his chest, spreading the Coppertone in a circular motion. She paused at his nipples, caressing the soft curls springing from the aureoles, and tugged playfully.
âOuch,â John exclaimed, pushing her hands away. âStop it.â
âSorry.â Her apology was accompanied by an unrepentant smile. The tube was suddenly yanked out of Daisyâs hand, and she was about to protest when she saw the look in Gregâs eyes. He was acting like a true chaperone, bristling with unwarranted anger. Why in heavenâs name was he so furious?
âMove away and let me finish this,â he said sullenly. âGo and check on our merienda.â
âItâs ready,â she whined. âThey donât need me to check anything.â
âGo swimming, then,â Greg ordered. âI think you need to cool off.â
âMaybe you do,â she retorted.
âMargarita,â Greg rumbled menacingly. He was glowering at her flirtatiousness, but Daisy was impervious to the dagger looks. She knew there wasnât much he could do other than a verbal reprimand, although it did look like he was ready to pick her up and throw her in the ocean. Nevertheless, there was no sense in aggravating him any further. Daisy spun around and headed over to the group huddled around the small fire pit, and snatched a bamboo skewer out of Lilyâs hand.
âWhat are you eating?â John asked, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
âBanana-que,â she replied, taking a bite of the sweet plantain that had been heated over the smoldering coconut husks and then sprinkled with sugar.
