Jake pulled up in front of a filthy three-story row house a few blocks from Chinatown. The bricks were black with grunge. There was a large dead plant on the porch. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself out of the Pinto and headed for the steps, the whole time fighting the urge to pivot on the heel of his polished wingtips and forget the whole thing. He and Rhonda had barely spoken since that day by the locker. They hardly knew each other. He shot up the three steps to the porch and rapped on the door then stared at the gray smudges around the doorknob.

A few painful seconds passed. He glanced back at the Pinto. How many times had he sat crammed in the back seat of that car listening to Ernest bullshit his mom? Once, right after he and Ernest had had one of their “cleansing” sessions, when his mom was going on and on about her struggle to “stay on the righteous path” and not succumb to “the sins of the flesh,” he heard Ernest tell her that it was “once difficult for him too,” but his “earthly desires had been quenched since he’d devoted his life to Jesus.”

A bead of sweat trickled down Jake’s temple. He raised his hand to wipe it away. The door flew open revealing a carbon copy of Rhonda, only older and fatter and with bigger hair and more makeup. She looked him over then spoke around the cigarette dangling from her lips. “You’re even better looking than she said.”

Jake shifted his weight from one foot to the next. “Uh, thanks.” He could see a pot-bellied guy with a comb-over slouched on the couch with his feet on the coffee table. He was guzzling a Budweiser.

“Rhonda!” the guy bellowed. “Your prince has arrived!”

Rhonda, in a short red sequined dress with only one strap, sashayed into view, the flimsy fabric of her dress straining to contain her voluptuous milky breasts and doughy thighs. “I heard.” When she reached the couch, the ribbon tie on her three-inch platform sandal came undone and she bent down to fix it.

The guy on the couch swatted her on the ass. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

She jolted up, letting the ribbon on her shoe hang undone. “Fuck you, Ray Ray.”

“That’s what I’m talking about, cupcake,” he said, laughing. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

Rhonda’s mom chuckled uneasily. “Leave her alone, Ray. It’s her special night.”

Rhonda glared at her mother then said to Jake, “Let’s get out of here.”

Jake held out an arm for her.

“Sweet,” her mother said, tossing her smoke into a can on the porch. “A real gentleman.”

“She’ll let you have it anyway,” Ray yelled from the couch. “No need to waste your energy.”

As they walked out to the car—Rhonda hobbling due to her untied four-inch platform sandal—Jake couldn’t rid himself of the notion that he and Rhonda were both somehow damaged goods. “Was that your dad?” he asked opening the car door for her.

“Hell no. Ray Ray’s my mom’s boyfriend.
