Chapter Eleven

On the boat ride back to Puerto Aventuras, Possum showed Rick his phone. On his Amazon app, he had clicked on a palm-sized drone called CHASING Dory. It came with a forty-nine-foot tether. They would have to add an additional tether to reach the opening. It had GPS and dead reckoning guidance technology. It was their best bet to get through the vent and view the cave opening. The drone they now had was nearly three feet wide and far too big to fit into the vent hole. Rick ordered the Dory drone and paid extra to have it arrive from Mexico City overnight. Rick called Manuel.

“Hello, Manuel. Que paso amigo?”

“Hi, Rick. I’m just finishing up here. Gonna head back to Tulum this afternoon. Any update on the search?”

“Yes, we found an exhaust vent coming from the cenote. I ordered a palm-sized drone to get inside so we can see the cavern.”

“Cancel that. I have one. I have two actually. How big is the vent hole?”

“I’d say about eight inches around.”

“Okay, I have a tethered camera that we can guide inside. It’s not as handy as the drones, but it shoots in 6K and has super strong LED lighting. The image is amazing. I’ll see you all later today. Oh, wait. I also have a grabber. I can attach it to the tether of the camera, and if anything small and interesting comes into view, we can hook onto it and pull it out.”

“Sweet!” exclaimed Rick.

They arrived back at the dock just after ten a.m. Back at the villa, they shifted their focus back to the case, since there was nothing they could do until Manuel returned with the camera. Rick’s phone rang.

“Rick, it’s Paul. I’ve arrived home and Kirsten is not here! She hasn’t been here either. I called her several times and her phone just goes directly to voicemail.”

“Did you call the airline?”

“Yes, she never checked in and so her ticket was counted as a no-show. I’m freaking out, mate. Something’s wrong.”

“It’s okay, calm down. There’s got to be a logical explanation. Maybe she booked a different flight or decided to go somewhere else first before heading straight home. I’ll do what I can to help locate her. I’ll call you if I have any questions or updates. What’s her cell number and what carrier?”

“It’s +27 555 1696, we are both on Vodacom.”

“Okay, try and relax and I’ll see if I can get any info on her cell.”

Rick hung up and called Carson.

“Hey, buddy, I need another favor. Imagine that.”

“Shoot, Rick.”

“Can you run a trace on a cell number and tell me what towers it has most recently pinged off of?”

“Sure, what’s the number?”

“It’s +27 555 1696 and its on Vodacom.”

“Okay, give me an hour or so and let me see what I can come up with.”

“Thanks, man.”

Rick got everyone up to speed on Kirsten’s disappearance.

“Dude, before you know it, this entire family is gonna be missing!” said Possum sarcastically.

“Let’s hope not,” said Rick grimly.

As he waited, he scrolled though all the photos he had taken of the villa.
