Aspen
That night, after the kids were put to bed, I got obliterated with the ladies on some fruity concoction the women were downing like water. When my buzz hit, I wanted it to stay. It felt nice. Iâve never downed copious amounts of alcohol. Other than a glass of wine here and there, Iâve never drank liquor, and I must admit, not having to deal with my problems for the evening felt damn good.
Glass after glass, my giggles eventually led to me opening up and sharing my background. Juniperâs parentage, and how she was conceived, had gasps of outrage from the women and growls of anger from the men resonating through the air. A cold chill spreads through me once my body stops spinning and I acknowledge what Iâve done.
Iâve told them my biggest shame, shown my gullibility, and have admitted how easily I gave in and became Matthewâs amenable victim. Embarrassment swamps me, and all I want to do is dig the deepest hole and entomb myself in it. The fog begins to lift. My stomach begins to twist and turn. Iâm not sure if itâs from the alcohol, or if itâs from me opening my mouth and opening myself up to public incrimination. Whatever it is, I end up leaping from my seat, my hand cupping my mouth, and sprinting for the side of the building.
As my stomach empties, tears stream down my cheeks, and itâs not from retching. No, itâs from panic. Mrs. Marsden warned me once to never expose how I was taken advantage of. According to her, itâd give others the idea on how easily I can be swayed. She stated I was too softhearted and allowed others to persuade me to do things I think are good deeds but are actually reprehensible. That first discussion with her taught me that I was victimized by a man I looked up to for half of my life. Her counsel led me to the conclusion that the pastor was just as responsible, and just as guilty as his son was. They convinced me to say yes to a situation that I was far too young to agree to. For the first time, I understood how disastrous my sheltered life had been toward making appropriate decisions. Those who were supposed to protect me ended up being the ones who damaged me the most in the long run.
Strong arms band around my waist. The earth starts spinning, making me dizzy. I see dark spots bouncing behind my eyelids, and then I pass out.
My one escape from the real world.
Beautiful, oblivious darkness.
A place where my fears disappear and sleep blissfully along with me.
