Genesis Chapter 26—God’s Promise to Isaac; Isaac and Abimelich
(Listen here, ESV)
1. What lie did both Abraham and his son, Isaac tell? (Genesis 26:6‑7)
They had both lied about their wives being their sister. Isaac had settled in Gerar, and his wife, Rebekah, was beautiful. The men of that place asked Isaac about Rebekah and Isaac told them that she was his sister. Isaac, like Abraham, was afraid to tell them she was his wife because the men would probably kill him so that they could have Rebekah. Abraham had told this same lie about Sarah years before.
2. How did God abundantly bless Isaac? (Genesis 26:12‑15)
Isaac planted fields one year and had a great harvest. Isaac became rich with many flocks, herds, and slaves. The Philistines were jealous and had destroyed all the wells that Isaac's father, Abraham, and his servants had dug many years before by filling them with sand.
3. When Isaac became rich, what did the king ask him to do? (Genesis 26:16‑19)
Abimelech told Isaac to leave because he was more powerful than they were. So, Isaac left that place and camped near little Gerar river. Long before this time, Abraham had dug many wells. After he died, the Philistines filled the wells with sand. But, Isaac went back and dug those wells again. He gave them the same names his father had given them. Isaac’s servants dug a well near the little river and found fresh water.
4. What kind of contract did King Abimelech ask Isaac to make with him? (Genesis 26:26‑29)
Abimelech came from Gerar saying that they knew that theLORD was with him. He asked that Isaac make an agreement not to hurt them because they initially sent them away in peace without hurting Isaac and his people.
5. What happened when Isaac made the peace treaty with Abimelech? (Genesis 26:31‑33)
Isaac gave a feast. Each man made a promise and a vow and the men left in peace.
6. When Esau was forty years old, who did he marry? (Genesis 26:34‑35)
Two Hittite women: Judith the daughter of Beeri and Basemath the daughter of Elon. These marriages made Isaac and Rebekah very unhappy.
