Silas

The Saskatoon Northern Lights' home arena was noisy and getting louder with each game. The rafters echoed with the cheers of our passionate fans.

Humility told me not to claim too much of the credit, but Per and I kept the scoring so low that it wasn’t difficult for our forwards to take control of the games. We gave master classes in goalkeeping. Fortunately, I got to see all of the action.

I watched from the bench as a powerful slap shot from the opposition looked like it would surely score, but at the last second, Per dove the entire length of the net to his left. He managed to get just enough of his glove on the puck to tip it up to ricochet off the crossbar.

My chest puffed out with pride in my boy. In another game, I felt like a mind reader. I sorted out an opponent’s fake and broke to my right just in time to stop what everyone assumed would be a goal. The Northern Lights looked invincible, and the goalies were leading the charge.

Following our success, the media couldn’t get enough. We were the Cinderella team, headed toward the playoffs in only our third year as an expansion franchise. One of the key reasons was the pair that alternated time in the goalie crease, challenging all who would attempt to score.

First, we started showing up in highlight reels. Then, things took a whimsical turn. Photoshopped images began circulating. They showed Per and me wearing superhero capes like Batman and Robin. It was hilarious, sure, but also a testament to the reputation we'd built. The Dynamic Duo, indeed.

The national attention was overwhelming. Commentators were astonished, fans were ecstatic, and even our opponents begrudgingly respected our talent.

When a national sports network sent an invitation for an exclusive interview, it was just the cherry on top of a tasty sundae. "Looks like they're curious about our secret superhero tactics," I teased Per.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t be as lighthearted about it as me. He saw the subtext right away. The media wasn’t only interested in our professional collaboration on the ice. They wanted to know what was happening behind the scenes.

The morning after we received the invitation, Per paced back and forth in my living room. He was a bundle of nerves, bunching up the hem of his t-shirt in one hand while he looked around the room with an anxious expression.

"Silas, what happens if I mess up? What if they back me into a corner with a tricky question?"

As I motioned him to sit beside me on the couch, I tried to calm him. "Come here, my boy.” I waited for him to settle and lean up against me before I said more.

"Listen, the media can be a challenge. There’s no doubt about that. They're fishing for a story, but that is how they do their job. Keep your answers short, sweet, and focused on the rink. If you're ever unsure, tell a story about something that happened in a game.
