A determined wind picked up. It was almost completely dark now, and it was only just possible to distinguish the path from the surrounding greenery. Suddenly there was a tug on my arm, and I tumbled back into the bushes, together with Mr. Booth. Something sharp scratched my cheek and I felt my ankle twist strangely. I heard Mr. Booth’s ragged breathing close to my ear.

“Mary, did I hurt you?”

I felt his hand in mine and he pulled me to my feet. “No,” I said, “what happened?”

“I am so sorry, Mary. I saw a snake.”

“A snake?” Something hot flashed up my back.

“An adder, I suspect. I couldn’t see it clearly.”
