The mental aspects of the Way
Following the Way requires balance and moderation in all things. It requires simplicity and even passivity in the face of conflict and disorientation.
To follow the Way with honesty and integrity requires committing to living a highly ethical life. This can start on the smallest level. For example, in martial arts class, one way to perform ethically is to give your best effort all the time, even when no one else is looking, even when you’re not being judged or competing with others. From that small step, you can seek to perform the “right” action in all aspects of your life. You may not win any awards, and sometimes, the price of integrity is high, but you know that you have followed the Way. And that’s better than anything you can buy at Wal-Mart.
As you seek to understand and follow the Way, you begin to understand the interrelatedness of all things. You can reach a better understanding of your place in the world, even the universe, while at the same time neither overestimating nor underestimating your importance or the importance of others (including your dog and your boss). You learn that to become at one with the universe simply requires patience and the willingness to sit still for long periods of time.
To start your journey on the Way, simply make a commitment to learning how to choose the “right” action. All else will follow from that.
