Deke

The night was too long.

I’d gone home and changed into jeans, and waited, and Lily still hadn’t made it back.

Our text communications had ended after her refusal to kiss me and our siblings’ interruption and near fight in the lobby.

I had no idea where she was or even if she was coming home. I’d been uninterested in the sparkly model-prostitute after that, whatever her name had been. But I could see from across the hall that Lily’s ‘fiancé’ was still attentive to her. She didn’t return the attention but he didn’t let that stop him.

My brother wouldn’t let me leave until the awards ceremony had ended, but once it had, I left, ditching my date that I didn’t ask for, and my family. I texted Lily as I hailed a taxi, but there was no answer.

Me: Lily I’m going home. Meet me there.

She didn’t answer.

I showered and changed and got a drink, and she didn’t answer.

Me: Lily where are you? Are you coming home?

Lily: Catherine and Ash made me go out with them. Sorry. I’m trying to come home.

Trying?

Lily: Mads and Valley are running interference. I should be home soon.

Run interference?

Me: Is Jared Redding there?

The three little dots blinked for too long.

Lily: Yes. I’m trying to get rid of him

Me: While making him think you’re going to marry him?

The dots again.

Lily: Let’s talk when I get home. I’ll be home soon.

Me: Fine.

I put my phone away, thinking about our last real conversation, about her refusal to kiss me. About this fake engagement she had, and the real marriage that was secret. I couldn’t wait more than five minutes. I got in the elevator and went downstairs to the lobby to meet her. It was better than stewing in my apartment, that she’d decorated for me, or hers, which reminded me of her.

Being reminded of Lily, and how she wasn’t with me but was with her fake fiancéjust made me angry.

When I got to the lobby of the building, the doorman asked me if I needed any help.

“I’m just waiting for my wife to come home,” I told him.

He nodded and went back behind his desk.

It was the first time I’d told anyone we were married, I realized.

We’d been married for months, and no one knew.

That felt wrong.

I sat down on the luxurious couch and tried to make myself comfortable amongst all the marble and tasteful metallic accents. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the door though, or the street in front of it, waiting for Lily to pull up in one of her family’s cars, or a taxi, or hell, I didn’t know, on foot.

I was getting ready to text her again, when the doorman opened the front door.

“I’m fine.” My wife’s voice was loud and clear. I began to stand. “Jared, really.”

I sat back down, astonished. She’d brought her fake fiancé home with her.

“No, thank you, Jared. I’m fine. You’ve made sure I got home safely. Thank you.”

The doorman held the door open for them as Lily walked
