To say that Chai is angry is an understatement.

I wake up the following morning to the sound of a hushed argument and come down to find Sarroch and Chai standing off in my living room. Their voices are low and harsh, and Chai’s fists are clenched.

The moment he sees me, he snaps out of it, smiling and turning relaxed. “Morning princess.”

“Having words with Sarroch?”

“Seemed necessary, given the situation,” he replies. Sarroch’s expression darkens, but he doesn’t protest. Chai gives him a cool look. “I’ll take it from here. I think that’s for the best.”

Sarroch’s jaw clenches briefly, then he nods. Can’t be easy for a Mayak to be given a dressing down by a Touched. Good for Chai, that he got to give it.

“I’ll be in touch as soon as I have any news,” Sarroch tells me.

I nod. Sarroch glances back at Chai. “Be on the lookout. I doubt Yue will come back here, but she will try again.” He hesitates. “And don’t be too proud to call for help. Yue is powerful.”

And then he’s gone.

Chai turns to me. “Api, I’m so relieved you’re okay. When Sarroch called to tell me…” His voice catches.

I get to the bottom of the stairs and give him a stiff, awkward hug as I try not to move my neck. “What were you saying about me making better choices regarding men?”

“I take it all back.” Chai takes a step back and examines me critically. “You no longer have my blessing to make any kind of choice. Or even be mildly attracted to anyone. No dating for you, no flirting, nothing. I don’t know how you do it, Apiya, but your love life makes mine look like a roaring success.”

“I’m not sure we can call this my love life. That involves something happening between both people in question, and Sarroch made it amply clear that won’t ever happen.”

“So much the better. The less there is between the two of you, the better. I’m staying here tonight, by the way. Sleeping on your sofa. No, you don’t get a say in it.”

I smile. “I wasn’t going to protest. I have a feeling that I won’t be sleeping great for the next few days, so company will be welcome.”

Chai’s expression turns angry again. “I can’t believe he let…No, no, this will achieve nothing.” He takes a breath. “Mr Sangong is going to be at the initial meeting with Sarroch and he will come by later to tweak the security spells on your house.”

“I should probably also tell Ilmu what happened.”

“I told her already. Sent her a message.”

“Oh. And?”

“No reply.”

I frown. “That’s odd. I mean, Ilmu isn’t exactly the warmest of people, but I’d have expected her to be at least a bit worried.”

Before Chai replies, Tim calls out from the kitchen. “Someone come open the cold water tap for me.”

“There’s a water bowl on the floor, Tim.”

“You expect me to drink from Hunter’s bowl?”

“You’re a cat.” I’d love to say I was pointing out the obvious, but with felines, nothing is certain.
