The tour finished around midday and the master led his group back to the station, where they all enjoyed their packed lunches in the comfort of the waiting room. Mr Drummond told the boys that they were free to remain on the platform for as long as they wished, having assumed they might want to do some train spotting, but he was going to catch the first train home. He warned them to check the train times for their journey home. Mark and Brian alone decided that they would stay for an hour or two to make the trip more worthwhile from a train spotting point of view.

That was all well and good, but that period in the afternoon was always notoriously slow in terms of engine spotting. During the next ninety minutes, only two passenger trains passed through the station and they were both diesel railcars travelling between Ely and Peterborough, one on the ‘up’ line and one on the ‘down’ line. Most of the freight traffic to and from the marshalling yard never entered the station environs. Only those from the South and East Anglia travelled within sight of the platform, but it did mean that the two boys saw a 9F pulling a heavy freight train past the back of the station. These engines were designed just for that purpose and were only a few years old. In fact, building of the large 2-10-0’s was still progressing even though other worthy locomotives were being sent to the scrap yards.

During the lull in rail activity, Mark amused himself by copying some of the toilet graffiti into his notebook with the intention of entertaining his school friends the following week.
