By the time darkness falls, my body is feeling so weak I doubt if I can take another step, and yet, I do. When we finally get back to the helicopter, it takes every ounce of strength I have left to shift and dress again. Cole comes around the helicopter, buttoning his shirt, thank goddess, and looks at me with concern.

“You pushed yourself too far,” he says simply, kneeling in front of me and helping me tie my shoes as I sit on the step up into the helicopter. Deft hands work quickly, tying efficiently and double knotting. His brow is furrowed as he chews on his bottom lip. Every few seconds, his blue eyes flash to mine before he looks away. “I’m sorry we didn’t find him.”

“Me too,” I whisper, dashing away a tear.

“Let me bring you home tonight, get you fed. You can sleep in your own room with an adjoining bathroom.”

“So you can slip into my room at night?” I snap, and the hurt on his face makes me regret my words instantly.

“I may not have acted like it last night, Astra, but I’m a gentleman. Let me prove it to you. You can meet my mother and the pack, and if it’s your wish, I’ll rent a room in town tonight.”

I feel terrible now. My heart seizes as if clamped by the fist of guilt. I’m judging Cole based on one meeting, knowing nothing about him. He’s been good to me all day, hell, he’s knelt before me and putting my shoes on as if he’s fucking Prince Charming and I’m biting his head off. With a heavy sigh I lower my eyes to him and nod, trying not to see how his eyes soften and his mouth curls into a gentle smile.

“I’ll go…but only for the bed…” I lie. I’ll go for more than the bed. I’ll go for knowledge, understanding. I’ll go so I can see what my life might look like now, if Rowan is indeed gone forever...

I’ll go to find out what the future might hold without him.
