My Wife Gets a Visit from Benchmade

The convoy is still on its approach to Baghdad. On April 4, six days before entering Baghdad, they were passing the vicinity of Azizyah. Tim and his lead vehicles came in contact with heavy enemy fire. “This battle is later documented as the most significant battle against enemy conventional forces during this war.” Tim was shooting at the enemy in a field from right to left.

I was shooting fast. As I hit the fifth guy, I took what it felt like was a sledgehammer to my ribs, and I fell down. I was expecting to see my guts hanging out. We are all wearing chemical suits at this time due to the Kurds being killed via chemical warfare the year prior, and we still had the unknown threat of chemical attacks. I’m trying to reach inside my gear to feel around my ribs and scoop up whatever I think is coming out, and I feel something moist, but nothing sticky. I realize it’s just sweat, no blood. What the heck? I thought. I guess I’m ok. I looked at my flak jacket and it was ripped up on that side, and my body armor was odd, so I knew I was hit by something. Corporal J was next to me, and he was laying there; his face was jacked up, and he couldn’t see through the blood. I cut his sling off his weapon and stood back up. As I stand up we take an RPG hit to the vehicle. I take shrapnel fragments to the head and face from the RPG hit. I fell back down again, and I see only LCpl K shooting out of the amtrack. He was doing the Rambo thing up there, going nuts on the enemy that were taking advantage of the lull in our fire. By now we had several Marines hit that have fallen into the overfull vehicle. One Marine, PFC C, was shot in the hand and oddly enough was laughing while doc was trying to wrap up what was left of his hand. Just about everyone that was outside the vehicle had been shot or took shrapnel. So I stand back up with a squad automatic weapon and grenade launcher and started working everyone out there; it was full-on mayhem. If you read a timeline history online, you will read that on April 4th Lieutenant Brian McPhilips was killed. He was the navigator for the tank element when he paid the ultimate sacrifice. We were supposed to go around Azizyah due to the known ambush waiting for us. When he got shot, we missed the turn and went straight into an ambush. It was rough. Picture a traffic jam and the first ten vehicles having to do a nineteen-point turn in a narrow street to get out of there and then drive back out of the city. It was pandemonium. I ran out of belt ammunition and grenades that day. I had shot all
