Bula’Bula Arts

Bula’Bula Arts is the cultural heart of Ramingining, the small community located in the heart of the heritage-listed Arafura Wetlands, in North-East Arnhem Land. While an art centre has existed in the community since the 1970s, Bula Bula Arts Aboriginal Corporation was formally established in the 1990s. The centre is not for profit, and its main objective is the preservation and cultivation of Yolŋu culture. Bula’bula is the voice of the kangaroo, and refers to the song cycle of the area’s main creative being, Garrtjambal, the red kangaroo.

Bula’Bula Arts supports approximately 150 artist members from Ramingining and its surrounding homelands, with a core group of around 30 artists. The community sits on the traditional lands of the Djadawitjibi people of the Djinang group, but is now home to more than 16 clans speaking 14 different languages. The work of these artists is captivating, with deep spiritual and ritual connections to the sophisticated social structures of Yolŋu culture. The centre is world renowned for the hollow-log memorial installed at the National Gallery of Australia, which was created there. Many of the leading artists have featured in movies such as Ten Canoes and Charlie’s Country.

Bula’bula Arts represents a strong group of weavers and painters with both traditional and contemporary styles. Works includes bark and canvas paintings, hollow logs, prints, and traditional fibre work, such as woven dilly bags, bush string bags, mats and baskets. Visits can include participatory art experiences such as weaving or bark painting and visits to artist’s homelands. Contact Bula’bula for more information.
