I figured there must be a better means of adding mileage. My solution was to add a second, “sorta long” run to my training week, usually about two-thirds of the distance of the longest run: 10 miles if my long run was 15; 13 to 15 miles if my long run was 20. It is possible to increase your long and sorta long runs simultaneously, but a more sensible approach is to stabilize your long run near 20 miles, then begin a progression featuring a second workout.

Do not forget that word I promised to use again and again in this book: rest. Every 3rd or 4th week, depending on how I felt, I would take an extra day or two of rest. I would back down from my weekly mileage and maybe skip my long run that week. That allowed me to gather strength so that I could progress to a still higher level.
