Kull had booked a $300 per night room at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead’s iconic luxury hotel. This time the room was under a different stolen Bank of America debit card owner’s name—a one Henry Hodgson of Harlem, New York. After securing his stolen items in the room safe he hit the hotel lobby and checked the remaining balance of the account at an ATM. Three thousand bucks to play with, he went shopping across the street at the prestigious Saks Fifth Avenue in Phipps Plaza. It was time to indulge a little and wind down.
He had purchased a new Armani Collezioni outfit consisting of a shawl collar, black cashmere sportscoat for $1,300, trousers for $365, a dark gray dress shirt for $250, and Versace leather loafers for $500. Back at the Ritz-Carlton he spent the next hour and a half melting away the horrible day at their ninth floor spa with The Executive Massage for another $200. Showered, shaved, primped, and gelled, he dressed in his new digs and enjoyed a fine dinner at the The Café lobby restaurant which ran him an additional $75 on his credit card. Finally, it was time for the drop of the hat.
Grabbing another taxi out front, and with his hat inside a boutique bag, Kull proceeded to downtown Atlanta. He was told by his New York-based broker on the phone, after she coordinated the final drop with the client representative, that he was to simply place the McPherson hat on a certain mannequin in some weird French cabaret-style private events room. The client himself would be there celebrating his birthday. This room, Le Maison Rouge, or The Red Room as translated in English, was attached to a large antique store called Paris On Ponce.
Paris On Ponce, as it turned out when he was dropped off out front, was actually a 50,000 square foot, sprawling, brick warehouse located on Ponce de Leon Avenue just east of downtown Atlanta in the Historic Fourth Ward District. This famous Atlanta treasure trove of antiques sat diagonally across from the tall, old, massive former Sears factory now being renovated for high-end loft apartments.
Le Maison Rouge itself, at 692 Ponce de Leon Avenue, was actually a smaller two-story former ammunitions storage warehouse from the 1920s. It was located on the slope of a railroad spur embankment, now turned into a beltway walking and biking path. In the mid-fifties, the 4,000 square foot building housed the original Colgate Mattress company, which supplied Sears until they moved out for expansion. Subsequent companies filled the space in the following decades. On the first floor is where Paris on Ponce began as the original antique store in 2001, until their success allowed them to expand into the large adjacent warehouse facilities many years later. The vacant second floor was then turned into Le Maison Rouge as an events room for rent, furnished in the style of a seductive French cabaret. The red room was so famous that it was booked a year in advance.
