Chapter Nine

Thy Must Not Associate With Witches

Pain ripped through me, feeling returning to my body so fast, my head spun. But it came with pinpricks from hell, and heaviness sunk through me. Moving was a struggle, my limbs weighed a ton, but the sun was almost on me.

Wolf’s blood.

That bitch wanted to kill me. No trying about it, and she’d stared at me with ice cold eyes. And I had no doubt in my mind who murdered Drew now.

I scanned the pews, finding the faint shadows spilling across a cupboard at the edge of the transept. I shoved out my hand and crawled, shoving my foot against the floorboards. A cramp raced across my middle. I cried out, bowing my spine and closing my eyes.

Get to the cupboard.

The words filled me as I opened my eyes once more. I shoved and clawed.

Heat burned across my arms.

Blisters broke out along my flesh, popping and oozing. Stinging so fucking much. I clenched my teeth.

“So...goddamn...gross.”

I lowered my head, smacking against the wooden pew. Every inch felt like a mile. I sucked in a hard breath as agony ripped through my insides. I slammed a palm into the inch-thick dust and dragged my body through the filth.

They were just lucky I wasn’t wearing Dior. I ground my jaw, then I’d really be pissed.

A squeak tore through the church, making me freeze. I scanned the darkness before catching black beady eyes in the corner. “Stay away from me and I’ll stay away from you, deal?”

The rodent just watched as I shoved against the floor once more. A savage burn tore through my chest. I coughed, sending droplets of blood across my arms and the floor. I stared at the dark red mess and tried to still the shudder.

I’m not going to make it.

Not going to see my Mom.

Not going to see Dad.

Or Ava…

Tears blurred my sight, whimpers tore free as I kept on pushing, lifting my knees to drive the side of my shoe against the floor until I passed the edge of the long line of pews. The towering cupboard rose in front of me. If I could reach out...darkness would cover the tips if my fingers. But my arms trembled and shook, until my hand crashed back against the floor.

“If you’re up there.” I lifted my head to the bright light pouring through the windows. “If you’re up there, then I could really use your help.”

My lips trembled, the words nothing but a blubbering mess. But there was no answer...not from the glaring light and not from Him.

I lowered my head back against the dirt and the grime...and then crawled once more, until the top of my head sank into the blissful darkness. I reached up, nails buckling as I clawed the handle...and yanked.

The thick wooden door swung open, darkness waited, barely big enough for me to fit. The stench of old shoes wafted out, making me gag. Still I’d shoved, leaving a trail of ooze from the sores on my arms behind.

Cramps wracked my belly.
