District Attorney’s Office. Downtown Austin.

Blaine drove downtown and was lounging in the lobby of the Earle building waiting for Wade Bronson to arrive. He figured he’d shake the legal beagle up a little and get the tag in his office at the same time.

Wouldn’t hurt to spook him a little. If he thought he was under suspicion, it might freak him out enough to force him into making a stupid move. If he found the tag in his office, he’d think it was the cartel boys and that would put more fear into him.

Answering emails on his cell as he watched the entrance, Blaine saw Bronson rush in and jog to the elevators in a big hurry.

“Good. He’s hustling for some reason. Hope he’s late for a fuckin meeting. The more pressure on him, the better.”

Blaine followed Bronson up to his floor and was right behind him when he unlocked the door to his office. “I need a minute, Bronson.”

Nervous as a wet cat, Bronson pivoted and snarled, “Haven’t got a minute. Who are you?” He eyed Blaine up and down taking in the torn jeans, the long hair, the sleeve tats, the Harley t-shirt, the bandana wrapped around his forehead. You need an appointment to see me and I don’t have any openings today.”

“I don’t need an appointment to see anybody. My mother taught me that.” He followed Bronson into his office, and when Bronson tried to slam the door in his face, Blaine gave the door a killer kick with his Harley boot.

Chains rattled as he crossed the outer office and passed the empty desk. Bronson’s assistant hadn’t arrived yet.

“Get out of my office or I’ll call security.”

“Do it. Call Leighton too. I want to talk to him anyway. I want to drop the hint that I heard a rumor about you.”

“I’m not interested in anything a thug like you might have heard in some back alley.”

“Not even a dirty rumor?” Blaine laughed as he tossed a couple of his Agency cards on Bronson’s desk.

Blaine left and didn’t look back.

In the corridor, he put in the earbud and heard Bronson say to himself, “Jesus Christ, I just called the super cop a thug.”

On the way to his truck, Blaine called Tommy.

“All done on my end, boss. What do you need?”

“You’re on Bronson solo. He’s in his office now and the tag’s in. I fucked him over and he might make calls. Keep on his ass and keep a log. Everybody he talks to and every person he meets with. We need to know.”

“Copy, boss. On Bronson’s ass. No letup.”
