Graniterock employees get recognition. It takes many forms, from full-page ads thanking them for volunteering for community service to breakfast with the president and CEO Bruce Woolpert on their first day of work. Keith Severson, Marketing Services Manager, shared with me that when he had “Breakfast with Bruce,” he sat next to another new employee, a cement-mixer truck driver. This driver told Severson that, in fifteen years on the job, he had never even met the president of his previous company. He was amazed to find that on his first day he was having breakfast with the president of Graniterock. This driver felt like an important part of the company. By simply having breakfast with these new hires and showing that he is accessible, Woolpert recognizes the value of the people Graniterock hires. He offers recognition that works.
