Audio: Finger drumming
This clip features a pattern played by hand using GarageBand’s Drum instrument. The first four bars are played with the Live Rock Kit and the second four bars with the Hip Hop Drum Machine. Notice how the kick drum and ride cymbal repeat using the two-finger gesture explained in Chapter 11.
Third-party apps also allow you to adjust the sounds for individual pads, so you can create custom kits and even mix the audio to suit your style. Of course, if you use an app other than GarageBand, make sure the app offers an export feature so you can import the finished product into your GarageBand projects. Most apps allow a mix-down to be shared via e-mail or file sharing and, if you’re lucky, you might even find that you can export the MIDI file too.
Ultimately, I recommend using the GarageBand’s drum kit. It offers the quickest route to adding your drums and percussion to your music as well as the opportunity to play along with recorded tracks. Although other applications provide more interesting options and a wider variety of sounds, the ease of recording in GarageBand is a major bonus.
When actually playing with your fingers, practice really does make perfect. The most crucial element to drumming on an iPad — to drumming in general, in fact — is consistent timing. Using a metronome and keeping your parts simple are good ways to avoid drifting out of time. Start with a simple kick drum and snare pattern to set the overall timing for your beat without using too many fingers right away. Once you’ve recorded these basics, you can add more drums on a different track or with your existing drums if your app allows it.
As you get used to playing the drums with your fingers, you can create more complex parts with multiple fingers and, therefore, drums. I also recommend playing along with your favorite songs in your drum app to get accustomed to finger drumming and help you create more interesting patterns.
