Chapter Seven
DO NOT DWELL ON THE PAST
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
Isaiah 43:18 NIV
Every year comes to a close; however, some people find it difficult to let go of what has been in favor of embracing what is to come. Every year gives way to a new year and with a new year comes the opportunity to move on from the episodes of a year that is headed for the archives of history. Every person has a past, present, and future, but some people cannot embrace their present nor plan their future because they are stuck in their past.
Too many people are stuck in the past looking at the still frames of life when in reality time is constantly moving and flowing. We are all time travelers. If we are to fully realize Godâs purpose and destiny for our life and to get the great things God wants for us, we are to keep moving in the flow of life. In other words, do not live in the past! The past is defined as: âgone by in time and no longer existing.â It is any period of time before the present. Too many people fail to maximize their time on earth and live the life God created us to experience because they refuse to bid farewell to yesterday or to yesteryear. While it is alright to remember the past, when remembrance of the past encumbers the possibilities of life we must write our past an obituary and entomb its events in antiquity.
Why is it important to keep moving forward? It is important because time wasted dwelling in the past robs us of living life to its fullest. Moreover, when we are handcuff to our past, we fail to seize the power of every moment and we miss out on enjoying the great future God has prepared for us. It is also important because we can only progress forward when we stop looking in the rear-view mirror of life. God never intended for us to keep reliving moments in our pastâpast relationships, past jobs, past successes, and past failures.
From Godâs perspective, our future is far more important than our past. In other words, where we are going is more important than where we have been. This is why a car has a large windshield so we can see where we are going. This is why a car has a small rear-view mirror to limit the time we spend looking backwards. âYou canât drive forward by looking in the rear-view mirrorâ (T.D. Jakes). Dwelling or living in the past can even shorten your life. The biblical story of Lotâs wife demonstrates how dangerous it is to live life looking backwards. After being warned not to look behind her, Lotâs wife became a pillar of salt after she looked back at the destruction of Sodom (Genesis 19:17-26). We all need to âRemember Lotâs wifeâ (Luke 17:32).
