Epilogue

“Are you coming home before I have to head out again?” Clem asked.

It was the third time she'd called in as many days. I knew it was time to take Levi to Tallulu Parish and introduce him to all my people, but I just didn't want to. Not yet. Being alone, only he and I, in our cabin in the woods was as close to paradise as we were ever going to get, and I never wanted it to end.

“But it has to,” Abigail griped. “Your mom is up to calling three times a day. If you don’t get that boy down there to meet her, Ethel’s gonna show up on your doorstep, Girlie.”

“Yeah, what she said,” Clementine agreed. “Get thee to the Swamp, Butthead. Besides, the Flock wants to have a party. Give y’all some presents. Make a big deal in your honor. You know. All the shit you hate.”

“Wow, Clem, you make it sound like so much fun.”

“Yeah, well, it will be. Now, pack your damn bags and…”

“And what?”

“Eds, I gotta go.”

“Wait. Everything okay?”

"Yeah, it's fine." Clem was suddenly distracted and if I wasn't mistaken, holding her hand over the mouthpiece of the phone when she wasn't talking.

"Clementine," I used the best imitation of my mom that I could muster. "What's going on?"

"Nothing, Nosey Ass. Now hurry up and get home before…" Whatever she was going to say trailed off into a fit of giggles before she hurriedly added, "Gotta go. Love ya, Eds."

And just like that, she hung up.

Turning towards Levi, I tapped the corner of my new cell phone against my palm. I couldn't believe he'd snuck out while I was sleeping to replace the one that gotten broken. My man was so sweet.

Biting the inside of my cheek, I tried not to smile. In no time at all, that Mule of mine closed the distance between us. Wrapping his arms around my waist, he gave me a quick kiss before asking, "What are you up to, my dear?"

"It's not me you have to worry about, my love. It's Clem. Our girl's got a boyfriend, and she thinks she can keep him a secret from me." Running my hands up and down Levi's arms, loving the way his muscles rolled and flexed from my touch, I kissed him back before waggling my eyebrows and chuckling, "Ready to go meet the family?"

“Absolutely.”

“Good, ‘cause I’m ready to meet the guy who can make Clementine Cooper giggle.”
