HOW TO CHOOSE A MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENT
The previous section might have been more information than you bargained for, but it’s all important stuff to know! The supplement industry gets a lot of criticism, and it’s not that surprising. There’s a lot of noise and misinformation out there, and a lot of people out there make claims of transparency and quality when their actions and actual values tell a different story. My prediction is that in the coming years we, as consumers, will be weeding out a lot of subpar supplement companies and rewarding the ones who really have our health in mind.
Why don’t we just take magnesium straight-up? Well, magnesium isn’t stable and the body doesn’t absorb it well when it’s on its own, so we have to combine it with other substances such as salts, acids, or amino acid chelates (which are the building blocks of proteins). This is why you won’t ever see just magnesium on a supplement label; instead, you’ll see longer words like “magnesium citrate” or “magnesium malate.” Both the size and function of the molecule that magnesium is bound to influences how well our bodies can absorb it and also which side effects (positive and negative) we might experience after taking it. The facts panel on the back of your supplement packaging will declare the amount of elemental magnesium in the product, not the weight of the entire compound. This means, for example, you don’t need to worry about how much magnesium is in magnesium malate versus magnesium citrate. This makes it easier to understand dosages (no math required) and explains why there are sometimes variations in the serving sizes among brands, be it the number of capsules you need to take or scoops of a powder you are directed to use.
