Chapter Sixteen

“Hey, did you skip one?” Nickie motioned toward the next pen. A pile of huge boulders in it were arranged in a way that made every space between each rock a potential cave for odd creatures.

“Yep.” Laura kept walking. “That’s on purpose, though. That one only gets food every three days.”

“How come?”

“Too much food gives him crazy energy spikes. Unusual strength. Kind of a bad temper.”

“What does he do?”

“Throws the rocks at other creatures. At least the ones he can reach.” Laura stopped at the next pen and lowered the bucket. “He’s sweet most of the time. Or, at least until I feed him again. But I think I’ve got it down to just the right amount and frequency.”

“Yeah, we can skip that one.” Emily struggled to keep moving with the pail clutched in front of her in both hands. “Laura, what the heck did you put in this thing?”

“Huh? Oh. The bit on top is just a little extra for everyone else, in case somebody’s hungrier than normal. That happens sometimes when they get upset.”

“Like when their caretaker’s sisters up and try to light the room but turn it into a rave instead?”

“Yeah. Like that.”

Emily frowned at her pail, the top of which was full of the same dry food as in Laura’s bucket. “So what’s under the bit on top?”

“That’s for Inez.”

“When are you gonna tell us who or what the heck Inez is?”

“You’ll see.” Laura cocked her head and pointed at the pen beside her. “First, we have to get the Cadrus Stone.”

Emily dropped her pail and approached for a closer look. “From the…”

“It’s a cadrus.”

Nickie peered over the edge too. “I don’t see anything in all that wet, shiny mud stuff.”

“She is the wet, shiny mud stuff.”

“What?”

Laura adjusted the tiny mist-sprayer on the side of the pen so it dispersed more on what still didn’t look at all like a creature. “I couldn’t put her in water, because she doesn’t have gills. She can hold her breath for a long time, though. It’s incredible. Still, she needs constant moisture. Drying up would be fatal.”

“Laura, I don’t see what we’re supposed to be looking at.”

The oldest Hadstrom sister grinned and leaned over the side of the pen. When she ran her finger along the center of the shiny substance, two black eyes blinked groggily open on either side of her finger.

“Oh.” Emily peered closer. “Like one of those flat fish on the bottom of the ocean!”

“Kind of. Except she’s not sideways like that. Okay, Candice. Open up.” Laura lifted the pail toward the rim of the pen, and a loud squelching slurp echoed through the room. The cadrus lifted its top half like the shell of a clam, revealing two more eyes on what would be the underside of its mouth. Those eyes stared at the bucket of food, and the entire creature started wobbling.

“Are those legs?” Emily pointed at the four tiny, flipper-like appendages on Candace’s sides, spaced evenly apart and couldn’t possibly carry something as gelatinous as the cadrus’ huge body.
