Chapter Nine

IT WAS RIDICULOUS, Don Corrasco thought, but such was life in these United States. Even a man of property could not have a phone conversation with a business associate without fear of being overheard by the agents of the Federal government. But let them spy ...

There were three cars, Don Corrasco’s bullet-proof limousine the one in the middle. The other two cars carried two men apiece. Though Don Corrasco had lived in Southampton Beach for many years, he was not familiar with the business section of the town. He tapped on the thick glass panel that separated him from the driver of the car. The man wore a sport jacket over the uniform, or livery, of the Don’s household.

The driver pressed a button on the dashboard and the glass panel slid back.

“How far?” he repeated.

“Not far, sir,” the driver said. “Another few blocks.”

“Thank you,” Don Corrasco said, ever courteous. It was ridiculous for a man of his position to sneak around in this manner. Soon he hoped to change the situation through legal action. It would not be easy, but that was what lawyers were for. Lawyers were like weasels, he decided. They sniffed and crawled where other men, real men who took the chances, stood on their feet. But lawyers and weasels were useful and necessary. Necessary like this foolishness now.

The lead car turned slowly into the large parking lot in front of the liquor store. Don Corrasco looked at his flat, gold pocket watch. A few minutes before opening time. There were no other cars in the parking lot except the car belonging to the owner. The first of the sodden creatures who relied on such places had not arrived yet.

Don Corrasco’s limousine pulled on to the ramp that led to the parking lot. The lead car drove up and parked in front of the door. The car behind Don Corrasco’s, two hundred feet behind, pulled over to the side of the road. All this used up the few minutes left to opening time. Don Corrasco leaned forward to watch the men in the lead car get out when the liquor store owner opened the glass door and made a beckoning motion with his hand.

The two men got out of the lead car and, after a minute or so, came out again. One of them took off his hat and fanned his face with it. Don Corrasco’s huge car went quickly across the parking lot and stopped beside the lead car. The third car followed. It didn’t go all the way into the lot. It stayed just inside the ramp. The two men in the third car got out and walked back to the street. Don Corrasco’s driver was watching through the rear-view mirror. When he got the signal he wanted he pressed the dashboard button again and told Don Corrasco it was safe to go in.

Don Corrasco shook hands briefly with the man who owned the store. Releasing the man’s hand, Don Corrasco asked about his family and was told they were all well—couldn’t be better.
