Hunter

There’s a clang sound that echoes loudly around the garden. The gun goes off but the bullet fired harmlessly into the air. That wasn’t the noise. What was it?

There’s another clang and I catch sight of movement in front of me. I work it out a second later when I see Rebecca standing there with a frying pan in her hand.

My attacker is out cold. I pull the balaclava off his head. “Georgie,” I say to myself. “I might have guessed.”

“A friend of yours?” Rebecca asks.

“Works for Lombardi. I’m guessing the Don has heard about us. Help me move him.”

“Move him where?”

“Into the house. I need to question him.”

“Nuh-uh. No way. I’m not helping you torture the poor guy.”

“You just broke his wrist and maybe his skull with that frying pan of yours.”

“That was different. I thought he was going to kill you.”

“He still might.” I start dragging him over to the back door.

“What will you do with him?” she asks, following behind me.

“Question him then kill him.”

“No, don’t do that.”

“Why not? He was going to kill me.” I drop him and turn to face her. “You need to realize that this is a dog eat dog world, Rebecca. He was going to kill me and if I don’t kill him, he still might. Is that what you want?”

“Can’t you call the police?”

“And tell them what?”

“That he broke into your place.”

“He’d be out on the streets by lunch and back here with more firepower an hour later.”

She puts a hand on my arm. “Please,” she says. “Please, don’t kill him.”

That’s when I realize something I never noticed before. I’ve been dumb. I thought I had all the power in this situation but that’s not true. She has. One word from her and I’m powerless. She’s changing me. I’m not sure I like it.

“All right,” I say. “I’ll arrange to have him delivered to Don Lombardi once I’ve questioned him.”

She smiles a smile so warm my heart would melt if it wasn’t made of coal. “Thank you,” she says.

I get Georgie into the kitchen and tie him to the nearest chair. Once he’s in place, I pour water over his head. He grunts, blinks and then his eyes focus on me. “Georgie,” I tell him. “You’re getting sloppy.”

“Fuck you, Hunter.”

I pick up the nearest knife and hold it in front of his face. “The only reason you’re still breathing is because she doesn’t want me to kill you. Doesn’t mean I can’t take bits of you and toss them to the pigeons. I’m not going to draw this out. I have more important things to do this evening before you so rudely interrupted. For every lie you tell me, I’ll break something of yours and remove something else. Tell me who sent you.”

He looks at me and then the knife. He knows the stories about me. His only chance of getting out of here in one piece is to blab.

“Don Lombardi,” he says, still looking at the knife.

“The thing I don’t get is why the wire? Why not just shoot me?”

“Don Lombardi said to make it painful.
