Sandi had quite a time showing Max that he would be all right with the seatbelt across his body and it would keep him safe. Max had no intention of being strapped down in one place that wasn’t his wheely chair, and he’d never had a belt across his chest. Her father wasn’t out of the house yet, so she finally asked Houston if she could show Max what she would be doing using him. Since Houston was riding shotgun, and Max would be behind her dad, she knew Max would be able to see. As she was leaning over Houston to make the connection, she paused and looked up at him. He grinned down at her. Sandi blushed, her heart skipped a beat, and they both looked away.

After Max saw Sandi buckle Houston in, he agreed to let her plug his seatbelt in too. Then she sat in the seat beside Max and showed him she was going to buckle up as well. Her dad got into the driver’s seat and hooked his seatbelt.

Sandi said, “See, Max, we all have to be safe.”

Houston’s house and yard were pretty. There were flowers in the garden beds, and the house was a pretty yellow with white trim. He was right; it was much smaller than the house she’d grown up in, but she liked it. It looked cozy, not cold, as she always thought their own house felt. Inside was a simple ranch-style on a single level with minimal furniture. She guessed it was necessary for the wheelchair. It was a home, not just a house. There were family photos around the room and on the walls in the hall. This was what she imagined a home felt like.

Houston’s mother had made a tray with tea, cream, sugar, cups, spoons, and butter cookies.

“You didn’t have to go to any trouble,” Mr. Powell said.

“No trouble,” she said. She was a pretty woman. Sandi guessed the accident had taken a toll on her. She must have been stunning before. Now, she had dark circles under her beautiful blue eyes. Sandi knew where Houston’s came from. “Houston, will you carry the tray to the living room for me?”

He did as he was told.

“Please, everyone have a seat,” his mother invited. “Make yourselves at home. From what I hear, it’s nowhere near as grand as your house. It’s the best we could do.”

“This is a lovely home,” Sandi said.

“You’re sweet, dear. I see why my son has taken a shine to you.”

“Mom,” Houston piped up.

“Mrs. MacAvoy, this is some boy you have here. You must be so proud,” Sandi’s dad said.

“I am, and please, call me Grace,” she responded.

“Grace. What a beautiful name,” her father said.

Sandi and Houston passed a look between them.

“So, this is the infamous Max,” Grace stated.

“He is,” Houston said. “Max, can you say hello to my mom?”

“Hi, Mom,” Max said.

They all laughed.

“Her name is Mrs. MacAvoy,” Sandi corrected. “Can you say ‘Hi, Mrs. MacAvoy?’”

“Hi, Ms. Mavoy,” Max said.

“Good job,” Grace said. “He’s very smart for as young as Houston said he is.
