Sevres’ subsequent experiments with color would be one of its distinguishing marks. Color was important to the Rococo style, Falconet, Boucher, Madame de Pompadour, and the factory at Sevres. In 1757, Jean Hellot, a Sevres chemist working with a soft paste that could be colored and introduced into porcelain pieces, created the color that would become known (first in England in the 1760s)[60] as Rose Pompadour.[61] In the same vein, the king and Pompadour held special sales of Sevres porcelain at Versailles around the Christmas holidays, encouraging those who were “true French patriots” to buy. She used her access to exclusivity to send gifts of Sevres porcelain to foreign dignitaries and rulers, making sure they knew that what they were getting had not been publicly released. This was the case for three pieces sent by Pompadour to the king of Denmark in an original Sevres green.[62]
