Technique # 28 - Enhancing your riding line
If you are a beginner, you will see many riders doing what you don't believe is possible, but remember that they have hours of practice (years of mountain biking) and are using all their skills to draw their lines. In the end, MTB is about fun, isn't it? Here is where you should be looking to improve your lines using all your ânewâ techniques, the main ones being the âlooking aheadâ and âbody positioningâ techniques.
In most trails, there will be a used line which is clearly the most ridden, although that doesn't mean it's the best line. Remember, we were talking before about straight lines and cornering techniques? This may not always be the case for riders who have ridden the track before you, and the most used line is typically just one done by âless skilledâ riders.
Mountain biking is all about balance and momentum, evaluating risks and making thousands of decisions in a fraction of time. When you improve your riding skills, you are able to make your own decisions and draw your own lines. Here, your ability to look ahead will be really tested and with practice, you'll find out that there are shorter and faster ways to do the same trails.
In your next ride on familiar trails, try different lines as straight as possible and improve your cornering on the same old turns. You'll notice that for the tyres being much narrower compared with the trail width, there are many lines to pick from. Additionally, by riding faster (common when you chose straight lines), you'll be able to ride further with the same time, or get home earlier to spend more time with family and friends.
