Hot glue can be used as a permanent clamp to speed up the assembly of baseboard components. This technique is demonstrated in the construction of the helix described in Chapter 7, where hot glue forms the initial bond between pieces of wood, giving the glue time to harden over a couple of hours. The final bond strength will be formed by the wood glue, not the hot glue. I never rely on hot glue alone for timber-to-timber bonds.

Another technique to reduce the construction time is to plan layout sections to match the lengths of planed timber available from stockists. For example, I bought planed strip wood of 2in × 1in in 1.8m (5.9ft) lengths because the 1.8m span was well within the structural strength of L-girders constructed from the above-mentioned 2in × 1in. This saved me the task of cutting lengths of planed strip wood to size to make up the required length of L-girder. In the building of the first stage of the fixed layout, only a few cuts with a hand mitre saw were required and those were for the cross joists and legs.
