CHAPTER 7

“Come in! Come in!” Mizzala said, clearing a space in her office for the Grandmaster and the Collector. “Have a seat!” She ran to the sofa, picked up a pile of old clothes, and tossed them across a stuffed tiger. The entire space was littered with bizarre antiques, cobbled together from over one hundred years of Earth history. Movie posters. Baseball pennants. Racks of clothing. Outdated technology. She consumed it all. “Sorry about the mess! You know me. I love my finds.” Mizzala was a tiny woman with a dark complexion and a warm smile. She had a brawny, compact frame. A mass of bright-white braids sat piled atop her head. Mizzala’s inviting spirit radiated sweetness. Her office, however, was a complete disaster.

Mizzala ran an underground sideshow and novelty theater. It was a place where people could unwind and enjoy a few hours of pure, galactic strangeness. Though she devoured Earth’s oddities, they weren’t always easy to come by, seeing as the planet was so far away. Thankfully, plenty of cosmic weirdos were in her sector, so she made do in between those rare and priceless earthly finds. She loved to show them all off. Mizzala hosted comedians, musicians, and artists of all types. Not to mention her crew of regular misfits. There was Nox Dovax, the Man with the Black Hole Belly. He put on a show once a month until someone got sucked into his stomach. People complained after that. Mizzala threw him some cash and told him she’d be in touch after the drama died down. She always took care of her talent.

Glendara was another favorite. She hypnotized her audiences, then sent them out into the universe to perform pranks. A few people ended up in prison after stealing a bunch of stuff from a Nova Corps outpost. Mizzala got into some trouble over the whole mess. The Nova Corps hadn’t quite forgiven her.

The Yooks were a Kree improv troupe. They weren’t very good, but Mizzala admired their passion, so she kept booking them to build their self-esteem. She was that kind of woman.

The Grandmaster sauntered around the room, inspecting Mizzala’s strange collection. There were shelves of stuffed animals, glassware, baskets, and children’s toys. Piles of records and stacks of newspapers lined the office’s perimeter. “Why do you have so many things but not display them properly? What’s the point of having curiosities if you treat them like junk?”

“This is my brother,” said the Collector faintly. “The Grandmaster.”

“Get outta here!” Mizzala shouted. “I thought he looked familiar. Well, Grandmaster, you’re known to always be sporting the latest in fashion. What do you think?” Mizzala asked, twirling in a circle. She wore a bright neon-red dress with a high collar. It was roughly two sizes too small. “I picked it up last week. I don’t know what Earth era it’s from, but isn’t it something?”

“It certainly is,” the Grandmaster said, his tone mocking. “Are you sure it isn’t a costume of some sort?”

“That’s the magic of it! I’m not sure.
