Fredricksen, Augustine and the Jews, shows how Augustine developed his understanding of the Jews to show that God had preserved them (and so they should not be eliminated) specifically to demonstrate by their rejection of Jesus the truth of Christianity and the failure of Judaism. Luther, as an Augustinian novice, was taught this view from his early days as a monk, and added to it with vigor.
