Chapter 11

Deidre

“I hope that text wasn’t from Jack,” Allison said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because you look sad,” Allison huffed. “If he just dumped you, I’m going to kick his ass.”

Looking her straight in the eye, I said, “First of all, I don’t need you fighting my battles. Secondly, on what planet do you think someone your size could even push Jack over, never mind kick his ass?”

Allison crossed her arms and said, “So he dumped you?”

“I never said that.”

“But you didn’t deny it, either,” Allison retorted.

I rolled my eyes. “He cancelled tonight, that is all. It’s no big deal. We’ve seen each other every day for the past week. One night apart will do us some good.”

“You know what they say, one night turns into two and before you know it, it’s over,” she sighed.

I laughed. “Are you telling me you and Carlos never spend a night apart?”

“Well, that’s different,” she said.

“Of course it is. Because you’re trying to get me to admit how I feel about Jack and convince you nothing’s wrong. I’m onto your games, Allison. Remember, we’ve been friends for like, forever,” I said.

“And that’s why I can’t believe I have to go to these lengths to get to you spill it. I mean, a BFF has rights, you know. I share everything with you,” she pouted.

Things I don’t even want to know. “I don’t ask you to, you just do. I’m…different.” Private.

“I know. That’s why I know you need my help,” Allison said. “If I don’t push you, you’ll do what you always do and stay in your neat little box. It’s time for you to take a chance. And I don’t mean having sex in your office. But that was a good first step.”

My cheeks burned just thinking how loud we were that day. No one else had mentioned it, but only Allison was bold enough to remind me of my…lapse of judgement.

“Allison, you know damn well that I don’t want to talk about me and Jack. You came to the warehouse to help me organize the inventory,” I said.

“Do I get my Ultimate Pleasure Wand if I do?” she teased.

“I thought you already snagged one. I mean, it’s unusual for you to wait until I hand the new products out to all the employees,” I reminded her.

“I’m not talking about the demo one. I was talking about one for me.”

I shook my head. “Sorry, the only spare is gone already.”

“You didn’t! I mean, I can’t blame you, but…well…. how was it? Is it everything they said it would be?” she asked.

“I didn’t keep it. I sent it to…” I hope I’m not going to regret this. “I sent it to The Love Vixen.”

Allison’s eyes widened and she gasped. “You’re a freaking genius. Why didn’t I think of doing something like that? Did you send her anything else, or just the vibe?”

“A brochure.” I wasn’t convinced it had been a wise idea, since it was so personal. But based on some of the questions she received, it didn’t sound like she had a problem with sex.
