"Christ, Liz."

"Honey, poor guy."

"Poor guy, my ass. I had lunch with him today and he was fine."

"Maybe it's finally hitting him."

"Doubt it," said Owen. The bed creaked and his dark figure moved off it. "Tim's not like that."

"Well, he is your best friend," Liz said.

"Not that I was asleep anyway." Owen found some shorts and strolled out into the larger room. He was a tall fellow in his late twenties. He opened the icebox and light fell on his pale eyes and mild, dreamy face.

"It's too hot to sleep," Liz said. "Too hot and too loud." Out the back window were the backs of other buildings, their windows pink, blue or yellow, covered with grates. "I don't know how you've stood it this long. And it's only July. What's going to happen in August?"

Lately Liz had been wondering a lot about what was going to happen in the future. She and Owen had been together now for eight months.

"We need beer," Owen said, coming back for a shirt. He took what was on top of the pile on a chair. Liz was fidgeting through her neat stacks of clothes on the wide windowsill, grumbling about something, probably that she didn't have what she wanted, a problem she had carrying things back and forth in paper bags from her tiny studio.

"You going?" Liz called from behind the divider.
