Chapter 22 - Well Laid Plans

Ziry

There was a coffee shop across the street from the lab the black witches had set up. The dark wood walls had black and white photos of the area, and shelves held antiques that looked like they dated back possibly over a hundred years.

The café seemed to encourage long stays. It had several small seating areas, as if the local students came in to study often. There was another group on the other side, talking loudly about physics.

Ziry sat at a table with Maria and Easton. At the next table sat Tamsin, Mazzy, Caroline, and Cyrus. They all drank coffee and had ordered the shop's famous breakfast: seasonal fruit parfait with a warm muffin. The flavor of the day was huckleberry. With the number of people in the shop, it was lucky they’d gotten the two tables near each other.

Ziry had been wary of bringing a local cop, but Cyrus promised he could separate his day job from today’s operation. “If it weren’t for you wolves and my new family, I’d be dead because of these assholes. They’re terrorizing my city, and this is the best, if not only, way to stop them.”

She’d heard both the truth, and conviction in his voice. His partner, Bexlee, wanted to join in the fun as well, but they decided to limit the number of people on the operation.

Ziry narrowed her eyes at the building. “Every day, just before noon, all the witches leave for a few hours. My guess is it has to do with recharging their batteries before starting a second shift.”

After sipping her coffee, Caroline nodded. “That tracks. If they’re making the concoction in batches, they need to let it rest. They also need to eat enough to refuel themselves.”

Maria nibbled on a muffin. “Does that mean the building will be empty?”

“Oh, to be so lucky!” Easton scoffed. He lowered his voice, though the coffee shop was loud, and it was unlikely anyone else could hear them. “They have humans working for them. We don’t know how much they know. They may be complicit in killing innocent civilians.”

As they sat, finishing late morning coffee, tea, and pastries, the doors across the street opened and a half dozen people left.

Dylan, Blake, and Orin were planning to follow them. If they could find where the individuals lived, or even better, their coven headquarters, it would help with the next part of Ziry’s goal. Destroying the lab and anything to do with the poison killing innocent people was the first step. Then they’d take out the creators.

It was already the first full week of March, and she was ready to get this job done and head home. She admired Tamsin and had been invited to the wedding, but getting home would be just lovely. A pang shot through her at the thought of leaving Rho. She’d become attached to the witch over the weeks they’d been working together, but she was sure their feelings were nothing more than a fling.
