I watched as Liberty assembled what she needed to make us sandwiches for lunch. She’d asked me if I wanted an omelette, hot ham and cheese, or a pizza pocket. I didn’t understand how any of those things had anything in common, so I chose ham and cheese thinking that was the lesser of the evils.

“Okay, so the lady said we didn’t have to use butter or anything,” Liberty mumbled as she worked. “And then put the sandwich right here like this and close the lid.”

“What is that thing?”

“It’s a Snackmaster 3000,” Liberty answered almost proudly.

“And that means what, exactly?”

“Oh, it’s a great appliance that saves all sorts of time. You can make breakfast, lunch things, desserts like pies . . . all sorts of good food. This is my first time trying it. It was on my porch when I got home. I guess they had it in the office from yesterday’s mail delivery and had one of the kids bring it by.”

“You ordered this thing? Why don’t you just use the stove?”

“Because the stove makes all sorts of mess. You have to drag pans out and all that. This is quicker and easier. Oh! And it cuts your sandwich in half while it cooks.”

“You don’t have to drag everything out when you use that thing?” I asked as I looked at the packages of deli meats and cheeses she had spread around.

“You sound like my sisters,” Liberty said with a long, drawn out sigh. “I like gadgets. Although, I have to admit that I’ve cut down on my purchases since I met you.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because when I can’t sleep at night, you give me much more fun things to do than lay on the couch and watch infomercials.”

“That’s where this came from?”

“I can’t believe you’ve never heard of the Snackmaster 3000,” Liberty said, completely shocked at my ignorance. “I’m really excited about the other thing that came in today too. Do you know where I can get some deer meat?”

“What?” Her rapid change of subject had me totally confused.

“Look!” Liberty rushed into the dining room and came back with a huge box. She set it down on the bar in front of me and pulled a small green thing out of the drawer at her hip. She clicked a few buttons and tried to cut the tape on the box and then looked down at the gadget in her hands when it didn’t cut anything. She shook it a few times and then smacked it on the edge of the counter before she tried again.

“What are you doing now?”

“This is the newest thing to help cut open the tape on boxes,” Liberty explained as she studied the gadget. “It’s easy as pie, I just need to figure out how to use it.”

I pulled my knife out of my pocket and made short work of the tape that covered the edges of the box before I shut the knife and sat down. Liberty glared at me for a second and then threw the little green tool at me.
