“I want to see him,” I said as Mia walked into the interrogation room where I was sitting, a cup of water in one hand, a roll of gauze in the other, and a frown on her face. It had been about two hours since I’d subdued the man driving the car that attacked us, and it seemed to me to be a long enough time for them to get whatever information they needed to get from him. Now it was my turn.

Not that Mia seemed to agree with me about that.

“Yeah. You know that’s not gonna happen, John,” she said, setting the cup of water on the table across from me.

“Why not?” I asked, reaching for the cup. “He attacked me. He tried to kill me. He tried to kill me twice, actually. I think I deserve to know what his reasoning was.”

Mia grabbed my hand and pushed it back. “That's not how it works and you know it. More than that, I’m kind of done fighting with you about this case. Now, take your shirt off.”

“Oh,” I said, my eyes tightening. “That’s kind of a quick change of heart where I’m concerned, but I’m definitely not complaining. Though, we don’t have a lot of privacy here.” I winked at her. “Again, I’m not complaining. If this is what you’re into—”

“Shut up, Lucky,” Mia said, rolling her eyes and grabbing the cup. “They told me you refused medical attention.”

“I’m not going back to the doctor for a scratch,” I said, shaking my head and looking down at my shirt. Sure, it was stained with a little red, but I felt just fine. I wasn’t wasting what little time I had left in the twenty-four hours I’d given myself so some first-year medical resident at a training hospital could screw up as he tried to bandage me. I was fine.

“It’s not a scratch. You’re cut from neck to navel, and I’m not gonna let it go unattended just because you’re too stubborn to listen to reason. Now, take your shirt off, or so help me God, I’ll think of a reason to slap cuffs on you.”

“Is that a promise?” I asked, winking again.

“Lucky, I’m not messing around. I won’t have you bailing on our date because your cut gets infected,” she said, grabbing at the buttons of my shirt and undoing them.

“Really?” I asked. “I figured the date was off when you hit me with the whole ‘stay out of my way’ thing.”

“You ever heard of church and state?” she asked. “That’s how this works. The church doesn’t touch what happens in the state and vice versa. This is work. What happens outside of work shouldn’t be touched by it. If you can’t handle that—”

“I can handle it,” I said, shrugging my shirt off. “I can definitely handle it. I just figured that maybe you couldn’t handle it. That’s all.”

“As flattering as that assumption is, it’s wrong,” Mia said. “Now stand still. This cut looks pretty nasty and I need to clean it.
