Angel Blood

Heaven was bleeding. Showers cascaded down, and wiping the rain from my face it felt sticky and thick. As my eyes opened, squinting against the onslaught, I saw a splattering of brilliant white illuminations pouring from the sky, each leaving a trail of sparkling lights.

Angels were falling to Earth.

Beneath me, the ground shook, I jolted as a loud clap of thunder echoed in the distance, and I realised I was frozen to the roof with the demon’s sword pierced right through me. My mind like a dense fog, the falling angels looked like a mass of shooting stars. Numbness seized my limbs, only able to move my head, I panted.

A massive thud on the roof seemed to jolt my body into waking, shaking painfully I twisted my neck and saw the crumpled wings of an angel. His body splayed on the rooftop beside me. Heavy footsteps, rasping as Demogorgon leered over me, fire in his black eyes, he pointed upwards, “The apocalypse, the prophecy is upon us.” Lowering his hand, he bent over, reached for his sword hilt, the bloody rain glistened on his coal black skin. I yelled as the metal scratched my ribs, winding me and sending my mind in another world of pain and confusion. Yet he continued, his voice gravelly, deep, “Out there the Antichrist walks amongst us. Now!”

In my weakened state, Demogorgon grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, hauling me up. Struggling, I turned my head, wanting to see the angel. Did I know him? Was he dead?

“They’re all dying Lucifer, Heaven is dying. You’ll never return home, Hell is your home now. Now and forever, eternal punishment. You deserve nothing less.”

My jaw popped, my body wretched, but the Mark glowed and my wound knitted together, agonising. This was what Cain had been through.

The angels kept falling, my anger burned, I struggled against him but my limbs were too weak, all my energy thrust into healing, as I felt my feet lift as the demon beat his wings taking us off the roof, higher and higher and away from the city.

Muted in the wind, the screams of my kin, glimpses of their faces ashen, screaming wide-eyed in terror as they crashed out of Heaven, hurtling towards the earth. What had the power to do that? Darkness closed in on me, pressing, demanding answers... Why was this happening, was Cain this powerful, how?

The demon chanted above a clearing, his black eyes merging red and I writhed in his grip to struggle free so he clenched his fingers tighter, and before us a hole opened in the ground, the earth spewing out, ground rumbling.

A faint stink of sulphur and metal caught on the wind. A mad flurry of rage fired through me. I had no weapon; I had dropped the dagger; I punched him in the kidneys. He laughed. His skin was so thick, and part armoured and I was still reeling. I screamed as he flew over the hole into Hell and let go.
