At eight o’clock, I knew I had to do something. I’d already spoken with the hostess at the restaurant to let her know my husband hadn’t shown. I even asked if he had called the restaurant by any chance. I went back to the hostess station and saw it was a different host this time, a young man. I explained the situation to him.

“And you tried to call but got no answer?” he confirmed, looking at me with concern etched in his gray eyes.

I nodded. “Yeah, it’s just not like him to be late or not to communicate with me. Do you know if the ferry stopped running?”

He tapped a button on a walkie-talkie on his waist. I heard him mumble into a headset and then wait for a response. He nodded while the person on the other line was talking, but his lips remained in a straight line.

My stomach felt like it was on the verge of exploding, but at this point there was nothing in it. It was just acid churning over and over like the sea during a storm. The weather system beating down on the island was wreaking havoc with my head; my temples were pounding from the pressure. Why was he doing this to me? I’d given him permission to play with Jasmine and Keira, but I never thought he’d ditch me for them.

“They did stop ferry transport for a little while,” the host reported. “They’re about to make an emergency announcement and ask everyone to shelter in place till most of the storm has passed. The time they’re giving is 9:15.”

“So, no one can come to or leave the island right now?” I verified.

The host ran his fingers through his dark brown hair. “The last ferry landed at 7:10. It was about ten minutes late. They’ve stopped the ferry till 9:15.”

“Okay.” Well, if he hadn’t made the ferry…that would explain things. And maybe the storm was interfering with the phone towers, though the messages were via wi-fi…so I would have thought they would work. Maybe the wi-fi was out?

“You’re welcome to wait here. We don’t have any other tables until 9:30, but there’s room at the bar if you want to have a seat,” the host offered. Clearly, the diners were going to wait out the storm in this safe, comfortable, dry locale. I didn’t blame them and wished I hadn’t given up our table.

I nodded to the host’s suggestion. It was better than standing here in the lobby. I thanked him and headed inside the restaurant, then up a few stairs to the bar area overlooking the winding river that flowed toward the Tunnel of Love. I should be on that ride right now with Calvin, I thought wistfully.

The loudspeakers erupted with a message from the Spicetopia security office asking everyone to shelter in place until 9:15, at which time the worst part of the storm was expected to have passed over the island.

“Hey, you!” I felt a presence behind me, and then a heavy palm landed on my shoulder.
