It’s been two weeks since I last saw Mercy the night of our date. We’ve had all away games, which of course her and the boys can't make it to. And they have slammed me with PR stuff, photoshoots, and meetings with my agent. On top of all that we have been getting slammed with additional practices.

Add my hectic life on top of Mercy’s hectic life in addition to living an hour apart and we’re basically a disaster. We text as much as we can throughout the day, and I call her every night. Sometimes she’s at the bar and can take a break and talk for a few minutes. Other times she’s home in bed, and we talk for an hour or longer. And sometimes she’s already asleep by the time I can call her. Basically, we’re like a couple of teenagers with crushes.

When I finally have my first full day off in two weeks, with the exception of morning practice, I decide to drive out to Mercy’s house around the time the boys will be getting home from school. I know Mercy is working today. She had her breakfast shift at the diner, and then she is working till five tonight at the CPA’s office. She should be pulling into the driveway around half-past five or so — I plan on surprising her with dinner.

I know it’s a little crazy, just showing up at her house, but I’m hoping she’ll see it more than sweet and less serial killer-ish.

When I pull up to her house, I see Rowen’s Audi parked in the driveway. Before I’m even out of the car, I see the boys barreling into the yard towards me — they give out hugs, and high-fives. Then I hand them each a grocery bag from the back of the car, and they start up the stairs.

“Mercy didn’t tell me you we’re coming over,” Rowen says as I stalk up the porch steps. I try not to look a little embarrassed when I tell him

“Well, she sort of doesn’t know, it's just our schedules have been shit the past two weeks. And this was my first night I didn’t have anything going on. I thought I would surprise her and the boys and come over and make them all dinner, ” I shrug, and Rowen plasters a shit-eating grin on his face, before slapping me on the shoulder.

“I knew I liked you,” he says.

“Think she’ll be pissed?” I ask, because trust me, the thought has crossed my mind a few times on the drive over here.

“Naw. Surprised, yes. Confused, probably. But mad? Naw. Well, probably not. I mean, most likely she’ll be fine with it.”

This does not actually make me feel any better.

We head inside the house where the boys have already gotten most of the food unpacked and are waiting for further instructions.

“What’s all this for?” Killian is the first to ask. I set my bag down and start pulling out the rest of the contents from my grocery run.
