We spent ten minutes getting ourselves up and ready and then headed down for breakfast. A large buffet offered a wide choice of foods. We ate a variety and then headed out.
It was a beautiful day outside and we walked along the cliff top loaded with my art supplies.
'Here's a good spot!' she announced and I considered the view. It seemed perfect for what we had planned.
'Yes! Let's stop here.'
We sat down on the grass and I opened the bags we had brought. I had several small canvases and charcoal, paint and brushes to get ready. Avery settled down and began to read as I set myself up ready to sketch.
'You sure this is okay?' I asked her.
'What?' she furrowed her brow.
'You just sitting here while I paint...'
'Ally. I'm happy. I'm enjoying my book, I'm sat in the warm sun and I have you for company. Relax. Paint!' she encouraged.
'Okay,' I smiled.
I lost myself in my painting. I sketched and then began painting. I was totally immersed in what I was doing. I didn't look up until I was finished.
When the painting was complete, I glanced over to see Avery watching me.
'What?' I asked.
'You,' she said simply.
I frowned my lack of understanding at her.
'You. You fascinate me. You're wonderful to watch when you paint, so passionate, so focused!' she enthused.
I flushed a little embarrassed. 'Do you like it?' I said, gesturing at the painting.
'It's brilliant!' she told me.
'Thank you!' I said, genuinely pleased.
A couple in their sixties wondered by as we were still talking. The women stopped by me and spoke. 'Oh, how wonderful! The cove looks fantastic! Do you paint these for people to buy? If you do I'd be very interested in buying it!' she told me.
I glanced over to Avery who was nodding her head enthusiastically. 'Um, yes. It's for sale,' I told her quietly.
'Wonderful! It will be a wonderful memory of Hope Cove. How much is it?' she asked.
My mind ran through the options of what I should sell it for. 'Uh...how much would you buy it for?' I asked.
The woman named a price which was way beyond what I had in mind. 'Well, I can do better than that,' I told her. I told her what she could buy it for and she smiled happily.
'Great. Are you staying at 'The Cottage?' she asked.
'Yes. I'll give you my details and we can arrange to meet and for you to pick up the painting.'
I handed the woman my details and the couple waved goodbye happily. As soon as they were gone I ran over to where Avery sat and sat down excitedly.
'Avery! Can you believe it! She bought my painting! Can you believe it?' I asked.
'Yes! Of course I can! You're talented, Ally. You should believe in yourself a bit more!'
I nodded at her.
'Go on then!' she encouraged. 'Go and paint more!'
'You don't mind?'
'Ally...!' she warned.
'Okay, okay...you're content...'
She smiled at me and I went back to my canvas. I painted another scene of Hope Cove and sat back happy with my efforts.
