Some may suspect Clancy of making up the stories contained in these letters. Did the cook really fry up some chicken pieces, especially for him? Was there really so many pats outside the supermarket, and so many compliments at the service station? Was there really a shearer’s wife, like a character from a Henry Lawson story, talking about her loyal dog?

Since I was there, I can offer the assurance: it all happened just as Clancy describes.
