Chapter 15

A hummingbird fluttered around the front beds where Evan was planting spring flowers. He forced his attention to the task at hand, despite the lovely distraction a few hundred yards away.

There was a time when he would’ve taken a swig of some drink and sauntered up to her with all the confidence of a crackhead in an alley: stupid, diluted, and out of his mind. Now, his gut twisted with doubt and curiosity. Part of him wanted to go ask her what the heck she was doing with an 85mm for a wide mountain view.

Once all the plants were in the ground, he dusted off his pants and closed up the fertilizer bag. The breeze brought the aroma of a light lilac and rose with a vanilla undertone that reminded him of Jolie’s perfume. Great, the woman was a huge distraction even to his senses.

He took off his gloves and eyed the cherry blossom tree that bloomed with new life at the edge of the playground. On the far side and toward the road, Jolie fought with a white sheet on a makeshift card table. The wind spun up into a twirl of hair and cloth and frustration.

Evan eyed the church and then the sky. “What do you want me to do?” He’d used the excuse of work for the last hour, but since he’d gotten an early start, there was little left to be done, if anything, so he was out of excuses.

He tossed the gloves to the ground and marched to Jolie. “You need to change the lens.”

She pushed her sunglasses up onto her head, which revealed her beautiful eyes that were the color of the morning sky.

“That lens is meant for portraits. You need that one to get a quality image of the mountain range.” He held out his hand for the camera, but she continued to look at the strap hanging from the camera. “It’s too late. The sunlight’s fading. There’s no way I’ll get these images to my client by tonight.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.” She blinked. Were those tears in her eyes? Oh, dear Lord in Heaven, he was a sucker for a woman in distress. The sunlight was fading, but he could see the sunset as a backdrop. His mind spun up with different shots he could take. “Then it won’t hurt for me to try.”

She dropped the camera unceremoniously into his palm and held her hands up in surrender. “Be my guest.”

“Don’t go anywhere. We need to work quick. Let me have that lens.” He pointed, and she retrieved it for him. “Great, now move this glass jar down to the grass over there.”

“What?”

“You can waste time asking questions, or we can try to get this done before dark.” He changed the lens and fixed the settings before rounding the table and holding the viewfinder to his eye, but he paused and lowered it to his chest.

“What?”

“You need to promise me something.”

“Anything. What is it?”

“My name doesn’t appear anywhere for these pictures, and you find someone else for the shoot.
