Chapter 15

Reylen

Reylen’s eyes narrowed to slits as Fin spoke with her husband. They knew something about her family. She couldn’t get every word. Her ears were still water-logged. And she kept having to blink back the blurriness in her vision. That didn’t usually happen when she was swimming, and it was most inconvenient now.

She joined Matt in saying goodbye to Fin, giving him one of her mother’s graceful nods. Now that he was out of the way, she could work on Matt. But how to go about it?

He looked back at her as his cousin left, and even with her blurry vision, the sudden wariness on his features was unmistakable. He did know something about her parents.

“We’d better leave now,” he said, avoiding her gaze as he ducked around her to scoop dirt over the fire. “It’s too bad I treated the pack and blanket with my masking solution. Luckily the extra clothes were never treated. Did you have enough to eat?”

“Yes, thank you.”

Matt filled the pack with some rocks and threw it in the lake. He slipped a few remaining supplies into his pocket, and they were soon off. Reylen studied him as they walked. He’d been so funny when he strained to open the ointment jar, just like when he’d been floundering in the water. For such an immense, hairy, intimidating person, he sometimes looked like a confused little boy. And it was sweet that he’d tried to save her. More than sweet. Heroic, really. He’d risked his life for her. Perhaps he felt honor-bound, or maybe he actually cared.

She’d doubted him when his cousin came, but then Matt defended her, winked at her, setting her at ease. If only he wasn’t keeping secrets.

What could Fin have meant about more to her mother than appearances? Her mother had built her life around her social prowess. She was beautiful, delightful, and everyone loved her. That was what made her mother amazing; the ability to make anyone love her, but Fin meant something else. For the thousandth time, Reylen wished she’d read her mother’s letter. After a few more minutes, her vision was back to normal, and she’d shaken the last of the water from her ears.

Twice, Matt changed course after seeing human footprints mingled with paw prints. Reylen wouldn’t have seen them at all if he hadn’t pointed them out to her. She wondered at his tracking skill as she followed along behind him. He couldn’t have a magical gift or be a sorcerer. He wasn’t old enough, wasn’t mysterious enough. Nothing strange happened or hurt her while he was near. Not that all sorcerers accidentally hurt people, but being near one put you at risk. Reylen didn’t feel nearly as uncomfortable being near Matt now. She told herself it had nothing to do with the way his shoulders filled out his shirt so nicely.

She needed to get more information out of Matt, but he kept busy, even when they stopped to rest, and actually seemed to avoid her gaze.
