By dawn, Craley and the surrounding township were swarming—not with insects—but with state police and the National Guard. The bugs themselves dissipated with the sunrise, falling to the ground and flopping around helplessly while they smoked and sizzled and popped.

I escaped amidst the chaos—just another traumatized local. I joined the others at a Red Cross shelter, and then, when I got the chance, I headed for the highway, stuck out my thumb, and eventually got a ride.

Then I went back to work.
