Chapter 11: Danny
“Oh, I’m totally going to that,” Schwartz declared on Monday when the topic of the Frilly Green Chile Ball surfaced.
Danny hesitated to embrace the notion of sharing such a potentially awkward evening with his straight, married, father-of-six best friend, but they had few secrets from each other, and he didn’t especially want to go by himself.
“Whaddaya say, Monica?” Schwartz boomed, waddling from Danny’s office into the reception area. “Saturday night? You in?”
“For what?” she asked.
“This Chilly Willy Hillbilly Ball or whatever it’s called.”
A blank look from Monica, followed by a quick glance to make sure she could access the First Aid kit if her boss was, in fact, having a stroke. “The what?”
“What’s it called, Danny?” Schwartz, never a whisperer, hollered.
“The ‘Frilly Green Chile Ball,’” Danny said, following Schwartz into the front room of the old filling station. “Ashok’s thing,” he said to Monica, expecting to clarify.
She let fly a withering glance, swiveling her confectionery coif to encompass both men in her disdain. “Is that a drag event?” she asked.
“Well yeah,” Danny said.
“And what, pray tell, is Ashok doing attending a drag event this weekend?” she asked Danny pointedly.
“Um…” She lived with him; Danny knew she’d seen his room—never mind Danny naked in it. She had to know. “He’s a big drag queen?” he ventured.
“No thanks to you,” Monica accused.
“Me? He was doing drag way before I met him.”
“Don’t I know it?” Monica said. “And while we’re on the subject, when exactly are you planning to step in and put a stop to this nonsense?”
“Me? Look, I may not understand exactly what this scene is all about, but my job as Ashok’s boyfriend is to support him if I can.”
Monica harrumphed. “Never mind ‘support.’ It’s your job as Ashok’s boyfriend—that I got for him, not that I’m trying to make it about that, although, You’re Welcome—to remind him that he’s a boy. What do you think, I set you two up because I wanted freakishly huge grandbabies?”
“You know he can’t actually get me pregnant, right?”
Monica’s hand flew up in a silencing arc. “Please spare me the details of who’s not impregnating whom,” she said. “But Danny, please, see if you can talk some sense into him. This whole drag thing is really too much for me. I’m fine with a gay son—hell, I’m even fine with Sasquatch for a gay son-in-law—but this dress thing…”
“So Monica’s out,” Schwartz barked. “But me and you? It’s Chicks with Dicks on Friday. Come get me at seven, cuz you’re gonna have to take me out and get me good and drunk first.”
* * * *
Schwartz barely fit in Danny’s car—What the hell does he eat all day?—but he was fired up for the Frilly Green Chile Ball, and had no intention of being in any condition to drive by the time it started, never mind after it was over. So Danny played chauffeur, although he had a pocket full of cab fare for just in cases. Aaron Schwartz was the first person in the whole wide world Danny had come out to.
