I have no idea how much time has passed when I slowly come back to consciousness. For a second, I don’t know anything.

My head hurts, and my thoughts are slow and hazy while my brain tries to catch up. I remember being at the coffee place with Scarlett, and I remember going home. I remember searching for my phone, and then—

It hits me with a bolt of adrenaline that I got basically kidnapped in front of the house, and I jerk my head up, looking around frantically.

I don’t recognize the building I’m in. It looks generic enough that it could be anywhere. I also realize that I’m tied to a chair, my arms bound behind me.

My breathing comes in fast pants, and my heart is racing, but I try to make myself calm down. Getting frantic and starting to panic won’t help here. I have to figure out where I am and what happened before I can do anything to try and get out of it.

Although, considering the situation at hand, I have a pretty good idea of who the fuck is behind this.

Someone clears their throat, and the image of Hugh striding toward me comes into focus as my vision clears. I clench my jaw, shoving away the nausea that grips my stomach as he comes to stand over me.

He’s smiling, but there’s nothing friendly in it at all. His brown eyes are cold as he looks at me, and I glare right back. The fact that he looks so much like my father pisses me off. My dad is in a safe house somewhere because of this man. He missed my wedding because of this man, and that just makes me hate Hugh more. He’s a fucking asshole, a monster, and I wish he looked like one on the outside.

“Mercy,” he drawls, and his voice is like cold oil, slimy and gross. “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. You really thought this was over?”

“It’s supposed to be over,” I snap back. “It’s not my fault you can’t fucking let shit go. We had a deal. I beat your guy fair and square, which I know you didn’t think I could do. Sorry to disappoint you.”

My uncle’s eyes narrow, and the smile drops from his face, making him look even more dangerous, like a predatory animal. It’s clear he’s pissed off, still holding a grudge that he didn’t get what he wanted before.

“You chose the Black Roses over me,” he bites out. “Over your family. Over your blood. And I know I said that I wouldn’t retaliate, but… well.” He chuckles darkly. “I’ve never taken rejection very well at all.”

His smile is pure cruelty, and it sends a spike of fear shooting through my chest.

He could do anything to me right now. I have no idea where we are or if anyone even knows how to find me. Hugh could shoot me in the fucking face, and I couldn’t stop him. I’m tied to a chair, still woozy from whatever knocked me out and completely unable to defend myself.
